Future Student Letter

Dear Future Student,

I've never really liked writing and I didn't think I would like this class. I found out that our course theme was food/foodways and I was not looking forward to the assignments we were going to be completing. After the first couple of classes and some discussions about how different people view food, I realized that English 110 wasn't going to be that bad.

In order to be successful in English 110, just complete the work. I wouldn't wait until the last minute to start the larger assignments. Writing in small chunks at a time helped me. Make sure to turn everything in on time and take your instructor's advice to heart. Apply any suggestions you are given to future assignments and you'll do fine. Use the correct style for the type of assignment you are working as too. Be formal in academic papers like the Analytical Research Paper and Commonplace editing that you will do. You can be more casual in the blogs, Commonplace, and some small in class exercises.

The class will be more fun if you interact with other people in the class. The same applies with the instructor and discussions that will occur during class. Try to have fun with what you're doing or it won't be any fun. I personally enjoyed that video clips that we were shown during class, and the analysis of a comic that we looked at. Hopefully you will enjoy your class as much as I did. Good luck!

-Brian

Food and Community

I was born in Buffalo, NY and moved to Stow, OH so I'll name one from each. In Buffalo the most associated food with the city is the buffalo wing (obvious answer). Since that's where buffalo wings originated, they are very dear to the city. As for Stow, I don't think there is one specific food that is important. Although I see a handful of corn stands set up on the sides of roads during summer. I do eat a lot of corn on the cob during summer, so I'll say that corn is kind of an important food to where I'm from, and the Midwest as a whole.

PSA Sources

This trailer for the movie "Supersize Me" is a great example of how fast food can be extremely harmful for a person. This is an extreme case in which McDonald's is consumed for each meal of every day for a month, but as mentioned in the trailer, the food was literally killing him. Usually I get fast food when I need to eat something in a hurry while I'm driving or about to go somewhere, but some people do eat fast food every day and that is unhealthy (an obvious observation). I'm thinking about using this trailer as a source because it's somewhat informative and interesting to me.

This clip is from the show "Man vs Food" and I believe it shows that sometimes we eat more than we should. Most restaurants these days give portions that are much bigger than what we need for a daily portion. Those sandwiches are 10 lbs. that would be a great personal accomplishment to do that, but I would almost consider that gluttony and at those sandwiches look kind of nasty to be honest. I think the problem is that we are used to eating bigger portions from a young age so it just feels like we need to eat a bigger amount of food at each meal to feel satisfied. That's just my opinion though, let me know what you think.

Favorite Meals

I'm not a freuqent blogger so I apologize if this seems to be lack-luster or boring. I'll start by saying that my name is Brian Hadley, and I went to Stow-Munroe Falls High School. If you know where Stow is that's awesome, if you don't I'm not surprised because not many people do. In regards to the food in my room, I don't have that much, so I'll talk about my favorite meals.

During the cold weather I love eating chicken, rice and gravy. My mom makes her own gravy and prepares the chicken and the end result is delicious. I don't remember the first time I had it, but I like it so much because it's one of those "Sunday meals". It's just a home cooked, hearty meal and it's nice to have a warm, filling meal during the winter season. When it comes to the summer and warmer weather, the grill is where it's at. Pretty much anything off of the grill is my favorite summer food. To me there is nothing better than having a cook-out with family and friends. There's burgers, hot dogs, kabobs, ribs and can't forget the steak. I know that I didn't name a specific meal as my favorite, but the flavor that food obtains coming off of the grill is not matched by anything in my opinion. It's not just the food either, grilling out for me is a family thing. I've been grilling or watching my dad grill since I was like 11 or 12 years old, and it's nice to hang out on the deck and just talk with my family while the food is being cooked. If you haven't noticed, I'm a family oriented person and I'm very close with them.

So there it is. I like almost all food and getting to sit at the table and eat with everybody, but the backyard BBQ takes the cake in my book.
