PSA Sources

This trailer for the movie "Supersize Me" is a great example of how fast food can be extremely harmful for a person. This is an extreme case in which McDonald's is consumed for each meal of every day for a month, but as mentioned in the trailer, the food was literally killing him. Usually I get fast food when I need to eat something in a hurry while I'm driving or about to go somewhere, but some people do eat fast food every day and that is unhealthy (an obvious observation). I'm thinking about using this trailer as a source because it's somewhat informative and interesting to me.

This clip is from the show "Man vs Food" and I believe it shows that sometimes we eat more than we should. Most restaurants these days give portions that are much bigger than what we need for a daily portion. Those sandwiches are 10 lbs. that would be a great personal accomplishment to do that, but I would almost consider that gluttony and at those sandwiches look kind of nasty to be honest. I think the problem is that we are used to eating bigger portions from a young age so it just feels like we need to eat a bigger amount of food at each meal to feel satisfied. That's just my opinion though, let me know what you think.

  1. I really like the man vs. food. Even though superseize me is also a great one. The man vs. food is more original and I feel less people will know about it more then supersize me. Also, you can analyze in the man vs. food video on why they make their sandwiches so tall in the first place.

  2. I love your two choices. I think it's especially important to choose a source that interests you so I think you'd have a good time with Supersize Me. I also personally like your second choice because it goes unnoticed sometimes how much food we receive at restaurants and how much we're actually supposed to be consuming in one sitting. I think you picked two goods sources, you should be golden either way.

  3. Both of these are great examples of American "food and foodways." I feel you could do a lot with these sources, whether you choose to analyze a specific clip from an episode of "Man vs. Food" or a clip from "Supersize Me." You could even analyze a poster advertising the two. If I were you I would try to go with "Man vs. Food," just because I think it will be unique from the rest of the class' choices.

  4. I like both of your choices and either of them would work well for the purposes of this assignment, but I'm more drawn to the Man vs Food clip. The show's a big deal in America at the moment, and so your discussion would be a little more up-to-date and relevant than if you used Spurlock's older documentary. I think it'll also give you a lot to discuss, since you can look at how the show presents eating more than most people could or should as a challenge, so that food becomes an arena to prove yourself. Given that, I think it's interesting that the show situates this episode at gameday, another competitive event.

  5. My first comment seemed to get eaten. Basically, either primary source would be fine, but I'm drawn more to the Man vs Food clip. I think the show is a HUGE deal in the US at the moment, and so your ARP would be more up-to-date and relevant than if you used the older Spurlock documentary. It would also give you a lot to discuss, as you could look at how the show presents eating more than any one person really could or should as a challenge. It's interesting that it situates it at game day, another competitive event.
